Chemical Peel Pre-Care + Aftercare
Please read this guidance before your AlumierMD peel and refer back to it while your skin is recovering.
Your practitioner may adapt this advice depending on your skin, the peel selected and how your skin responds.
Prepare for your Treatment

For the best and safest treatment:
Use your recommended AlumierMD homecare for 10–14 days beforehand, where advised
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 2 weeks
Pause retinoids, including retinol, tretinoin and Retin-A, for approximately 7 days
Pause strong AHAs, BHAs, scrubs and exfoliating products for approximately 7 days
Avoid waxing, threading, depilatory creams and other facial hair removal for 7 days
Arrive with clean skin and no makeup
Please tell us before your appointment if you:
Are pregnant, breastfeeding or may be pregnant
Have recently used oral isotretinoin (in the last 6-months)
Have broken, irritated, infected or sunburned skin
Develop a rash, injury, infection or reaction before treatment
Do not stop prescribed medication without speaking to your healthcare provider.
After your Treatment: What to Expect

Mild redness
Warmth or tingling
Tightness
Dryness
Sensitivity
Light to moderate flaking
Temporary breakouts - these are usually fleeting and only occur within the first few days.

Do
Leave the products applied during your treatment on the skin
Keep the skin cool and comfortable
Use clean hands, towels and pillowcases
Allow the skin to rest overnight
Avoid
Cleansing again that evening
Makeup for the remainder of the day
Touching, rubbing or picking the skin
Applying additional or unapproved skincare
Ice or ice-cold water
Exercise and sweating
Swimming
Saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and very hot showers
Direct sunlight

Use only the products recommended by your practitioner.
Keep your routine simple:
The morning after, refresh the skin using cool or tepid water
*The evening after your treatment, you can perform your first cleanse, using a gentle cleanser.
Recovery or hydrating products
Broad-spectrum sunscreen
Clean hands and gentle application
Avoid fragrance or essential oils
Continue to avoid:
Exercise and heavy sweating
Swimming
Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs
Direct sun and tanning beds
Picking or rubbing the skin

Your skin may begin to feel dry or lightly flake.
*Redness, pinkness should start to reside by this stage.
Do
Keep the skin well moisturised
Apply sunscreen every morning
Allow flaking to shed naturally
Follow the routine recommended by your practitioner
Avoid
Pulling or peeling loose skin
Scrubs and exfoliating tools
Waxing, threading and other facial hair removal
Direct or prolonged sun exposure
Introducing new skincare products
Do not pick at flaking skin. Doing so can increase irritation and the risk of marks or uneven pigmentation.

Bring on the GLOW. Your skin should begin to feel more settled and comfortable.
Continue with gentle, hydrating skincare and daily sun protection.
For the full 14 days after your peel, avoid:
Retinoids and retinoic acid
AHAs and BHAs
Facial scrubs and mechanical exfoliation
Chemical peels
Microdermabrasion
Laser hair removal
Photofacials and other intensive resurfacing treatments
Only restart active skincare when the skin feels completely calm and your practitioner has advised that it is suitable.
Frequently asked questions

No. Some clients experience visible flaking and others experience very little.
The absence of peeling does not mean the treatment has not worked.

Ideally, avoid makeup for the rest of the treatment day and allow the skin to settle overnight.
Wait longer if your skin remains red, sensitive or actively flaking.
If needed, makeup can be resumed the next day, using clean makeup brushes and tools.

Avoid aerobic exercise, strenuous activity and heavy sweating for 48 hours.

Avoid swimming for 48 hours.
Wait longer if the skin remains irritated or actively flaking.

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs and excessively hot showers for 48 hours.

Wait at least 7 days and until the skin is completely calm.

Wait at least 10-14 days, unless your practitioner advises otherwise.
Possible side effects

Common temporary reactions include:
Redness
Tightness
Dryness
Sensitivity
Mild itching
Light peeling or flaking
Temporary breakouts: surfacing of microcomedones

Prolonged redness or irritation
Swelling
Crusting or scabbing
Temporary changes in pigmentation
Cold-sore reactivation
Infection
An unexpected reaction to a product
Careful sun protection and avoiding picking or over-exfoliating the skin will help reduce the risk of complications.

Please contact Nu-Clear if:
Redness, swelling or discomfort is getting worse
The skin becomes increasingly hot, painful or tender
You develop blistering, significant crusting or a spreading rash
You notice discharge or signs of infection
You experience significant or unexpected pigmentation
Anything feels unusual or concerning
For severe or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek medical advice.
