WHY WE LOVE SQUALANE OIL🫒

one of nature’s great emollients🌱🏆

What’s the deal with Squalane?

This biocompatible ingredient (readily recognised by the skin) has a host of benefits for many different skin types, making it one of my favourite oils in skincare.

Not to be confused with squalene, the naturally occurring substance that is a key component of our skin’s sebum.

This blog highlights the modified form – squalane, and how you can take advantage of its many skin benefits.

Where’s it from?

This modified form of squalene is originally sourced from shark’s liver, however 🌱plant-based derivatives from olives, amaranth, wheatgerm, palm and rice bran oil are widely used in a more stable hydrogenated form.

Benefits of Squalene in skincare:

☑️ Moisturising: Squalane oil can act as emollient, very much like our skin’s natural sebum (oil), making it useful in preventing moisture loss and restoring skin suppleness.

☑️ Protective: It’s reported that squalene has antioxidant propertiesIn vitro experiments indicate that squalene is highly effective at neutralizing skin damaging free radicals.

☑️ Reparative:  Squalane used topically can help supplement a skin barrier that is lacking in this element, helping to fortify this important protective barrier.

Who would love it?

  • Sensitive Skin: With squalane being similar to the squalene found in our skin’s own oil, the chance of a skin reaction or allergy is unlikely.

  • Oily Skin: The lightweight and non-greasy finish makes it a good face oil for those with an oilier skin type.

*It’s not as ideal in its pure oil form for acne-prone skin.

  • Dry Skin: The moisturising and hydration-locking ability of squalene makes it great for those with dry, dull and/or course skin.

  • Damaged or Irritated skin: Squalane can help fortify the skin barrier, making the skin more robust and lessen skin irritation.

How can I use it?

Although a nice addition to many products, we like the use of Squalane oil in leave on products, such as moisturisers and facial oils

Like most loved ingredients, they are best in a formula with other skin-loving ingredients in a more well rounded product.

⭐️ Tip: If using in a facial oil, leave this as your final step of your routine. I love it applied after your moisturiser has had time to sink in. Apply by pressing into the skin..
