Acids 101: The Do's and Don'ts for Radiant Skin

With all the different acids out there—like glycolic, lactic, malic, and salicylic—it can feel confusing to know how to incorporate these ingredients into your skin routine.

But don't worry, our straightforward guide is here to help you navigate the wonderful world of acids and answer common questions like:

💭 "How often should I use exfoliating acids in my skincare routine?"

💭 "Which acid is right for my skin type?"

💭
"Do I really need this step in my routine?"

How do they work?

Before we delve into the benefits of acids in skincare, let's first understand how they work. In simple terms, exfoliating acids break down the bonds between skin cells, allowing them to shed off more easily. This process stimulates faster skin cell turnover, promoting a fresh and revitalized complexion.

The Benefits of Exfoliating Acids for Your Skin

  1. Glow: Exfoliating acids accelerate the shedding of excess dead skin on the surface, leaving you with a radiant glow.

  2. Brighten: For dark marks caused by hyperpigmentation or sun exposure, exfoliating acids can help lift pigmented cells, making the skin appear brighter.

  3. Decongest: If you struggle with oily and congested skin, acids can be a useful tool to manage pore-blocking oil and dead skin cell build-up.

A few of our favorite acids

Salicylic Acid: Also known as beta hydroxy acid (BHA), renowned for its exfoliating and anti-acne properties. Its oil-solubility allows it to penetrate inside pores, effectively combating breakouts, congestion, and blackheads.

Lactic Acid: Derived from milk or synthetically made, this acid gently exfoliates the skin's surface while offering hydrating properties. This multitasking marvel positively influences your skin's microbiome and can help brighten an uneven, dull skin tone.

Are exfoliating acids a good choice for me?

Before diving into exfoliating acids, let's address a few skin issues to consider. If you're experiencing burning, stinging sensations, redness, irritation, or a tight "pulled" feeling after cleansing, it might not be the best time to explore exfoliating acids. Instead, focus on products that nourish, support, and hydrate your skin.

Introducing exfoliation: Tips for incorporating acids into your routine

  1. Start Slow: Begin with a low percentage acid, especially if you're new to the game.

  2. Try a short-contact form: Cleansers with acids are a great option to get some exfoliating benefits while minimizing the risk of irritation, as they stay on the skin for a short period of time.

  3. Mind the Frequency: For most skin types, 2-3 times a week is sufficient. Using every other day or two gives the skin a chance to recover.

  4. Up your hydration: With accelerated cell turnover, your skin can be prone to water loss and dehydration. Ensure daily use of a good moisturizer and hydrating serum product.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid: While exfoliating acids can work wonders, it's crucial to use them wisely.

  1. Over-Exfoliation: Too much of a good thing can be a bad, that’s true for exfoliation. Keep an eye out for tell-tell signs of over-exfoliated skin. That can look like increased redness, sensitivity, flaky skin or a general tight or “pulled” feeling.

  2. Skip the Combos: When starting with acids, avoid combining them with other active ingredients like retinols to avoid over-exfoliating the skin. This includes using multiple exfoliating acid products during the week.

  3. Skipping Sunscreen: Never forget your sunscreen! Exfoliating acids can increase sun sensitivity, so be sure to protect your skin from harmful rays.
